Match Report |
It was Colo who got the better of the early stages of this nail-biter, racing to an early 2 goal lead within the first 10 minutes. It was unfortunate that both goals came about due to defensive lapses, but the Blueys ladies kept their heads up and battled away, striking back 5 minutes later with a goal to Romy Thompson. Romy was sent through clear of the defence, with Colo’s adventurous keeper racing out to the top corner of the 18-yard box. With a tight angle and under intense pressure, Romy managed to squeeze the ball past the floundering keeper, and with the ball destined for goal a last ditch clearance attempt by the sweeper failed as the ball rebounded off the post and in. The goal sparked Blueys into life, and for the next 20 minutes it was end to end football. Deservedly, another breakthrough came with about 10 minutes before half time. Kate Tidy found herself in good space 30 yards from goal, and laid off a peach of a pass to a rampaging Hannah Sutherland down the right wing. Hannah took one touch toward goal, then buried the ball in the bottom right corner for her first goal of the season, leaving the keeper with no chance. Half time 2 all. Predictably, Colo came out firing early in the second half, and Blueys had to withstand a barrage of attacks. However, unlike the first half, the Blueys began standing up to the physical aspects of Colo’s game. A few nervous moments unfolded but our defence prevailed, and by mid-way through the second half Colo began to tire. The game opened up, and the Blueys started putting together some of the passing football that has been their strength all season. Colo were having few chances on goal, our midfielders were making dangerous runs forward, and Colo were finding it harder and harder to compete. Finally, with about 5 minutes to go, the constant pressure was rewarded when the Colo defender misjudged a long ball forward. It fell to Morgan Maloney, who stayed strong, shrugging off a challenge from the flailing defender, and was presented with a one on one opportunity which she cooly slipped by the advancing keeper: full time 3-2! Well done all! |
