Match Report: After a few weeks of relentless rain, our team happily grasped the opportunity for a run on the synthetic turf in a rare moment of sunshine. And I can tell you, if you weren’t on the sidelines today … you missed a good one!

Our boys came out meaning business; dominating the possession in the opening minutes and pressing back the Springwood advances repeatedly. Finn was particularly masterful creating multiple goal attempts that had the audience holding their breaths while one couldn’t help but look on in awe at the solid defensive efforts from Hudson F, Harry & Ollie, who despite being perpetually surrounded by giants, proved speed, agility & fearlessness makes all the difference.

Stepping up into goals like a seasoned professional, Oscar was tested today but showed true grit to ensure Springwood’s attackers remained hungry. The reliable, strong defensive presence provided by Eoin gave Oscar the opportunity to focus and truly read the opposition, making some remarkable saves. While thankfully the one screamer that slipped by was deemed offside allowing the team a moment’s reprieve.

In the middle of the field, Riley proved his courage, bouncing back from a ferocious blow to the eye, arguably returning to the field more determined. While Daniel, Hudson, Darcy and Levi showed true team spirit, never letting up and putting in endless kilometres to run down and take possession, turning the ball to our speedy forward strikers.

Some powerful corner kicks and throw ins from Ronan kept the momentum of the game flowing while Will provided forward support, trying to sneak the play past the Springwood defensive line up.

After a tense 30 minutes of anxiety inducing play, the drought was broken early in the second half by Hudson, who was able to run the ball almost the length of the field and land the first score on the board clean into the back of the net. But despite the immediate boost to morale, the Springwood attack found a hole in our perpetual second half slump to level the game again.

Sensing the imminent danger of applying the brakes and losing all momentum in the second half, the sideline warriors increased their cheer squad efforts and their voices sure seemed to rally the boys, with Travis and Levi both supporting each other with beautiful team work and passing to each land a goal. The perpetual support provided during every advance and sheer determination today earning Levi the much deserved nod as player of the match.

And despite some impressive forward drives by the opposition, the speed and determination of our boys continued to shine through until the end, with Ronan stealing a moment from the Springwood forward advance, turning a ball mid air from the side of the field to find the back of the nets. But the fate of the game was sealed by yet another beautiful display of passing and teamwork allowing Travis to score the final goal of the day.

Both the boys and the sideline cheer squad should be proud of their valiant efforts today.
