Match Report

The game started in overcast conditions at St John Oval. James went in goal for the first half. We spent a lot of time in the opposition half but could not find a way through the defence. Some nice passing into space by Connor, Kiran, Maeve and Arwen allowing Riley and Ash to run onto the ball. Kane made a few runs forward from the back. No score in the first half but the effort was there and the coach told the kids to keep playing the same way in the second half.

Kane went in goal for the second half and like James did not get a touch of the ball. As the weather worsened and the rain started to fall our team work was well rewarded with four goals. The first a neat finish from Riley, hitting the ball across the keeper. The second from Kiran a left foot pass into the corner of the net (thus ensuring bragging rights at school on Monday – 3 of the opposition going to the same school)! The third was a result of yet another great burst down the left wing by Ash. With pretty much the whole of the Blaxland team around him, Ash managed to get a cross in past them all to Riley in front of goal. Riley controlled the cross well and knocked it in although the keeper did well to parry it.

The last goal went to POM James. Running onto a pass and heading goal bound, James cut in and put his shot through the keeper’s legs.

Coach was really pleased to see some of the things we practice religiously at training being displayed in this game – all throw ins were technically correct; getting the ball out wide and then crosses being pulled back for a team mate (one resulting in a goal!) and cutting the ball out from goal kicks before it bounced (some nice headers from Con and Riley)
