Match Report

An early start on a beautiful Sunday morning, at home. Having come from behind twice in recent weeks, scoring goals in the last few minutes of a game, we were hoping to avoid The Great Escape this week. At our age, it really has not been good for the blood pressure.

Herr Mottweiler, Herr Hoffman and Herr Russell were all out with injury although Herr Hoffman arrived kitted up just after kick off. Sorry mate, I went on good advice from Swerv.

We started brightly, passing the ball well and creating an early chance or two for The Finisher – one of them he was felled from behind in the box but penalty appeals were turned away by Von Luger the ref.

Hazelbrook got into the game after a while and showed their experience and ability, passing the ball well in midfield, leaving us to chase, a lot. Eventually one pass from a Hazo midfielder was threaded through our defence for their striker to run onto and clip past The Stopper. 0-1.

Hazo created a few more chances in the first half but The Stopper was in fine form today – one shot was turned over the bar when it seemed destined to hit the back of the net.

In the second half we found ourselves further behind within 10 minutes of the restart. 0-2.

Now we really were in a big hole and needed to dig our way out of it.

With about 20 to go, Hazo’s appeals for a penalty were waived away and The Blocker dribbled his way out of defence and into midfield, hitting a through ball for The Finisher to race onto and slot home. 1-2.

The Captain made an inspired substitution, bringing himself on and scoring with a shot from the edge of the box into the top corner within a minute of his arrival. 2-2.

With our belief now riding high, a grandstand finish was on the cards for the 3rd time in 4 weeks. We started to dominate and created a number of good chances. The Sand Wedge dinked one over the top for The Finisher to outpace the defence and hit it well, maybe too well as it went just over the bar. The Crosser put one across the box for The Scrapper to head, only for it to be a little too high. At the back stick was The Captain, who hit it back across the keeper and just wide. With time running out, we went forward one more time. I think it was the The Ever Ready man that put a ball through for The Finisher to chase down and he got there just ahead of the defender and keeper to dink home. 3-2.

Hazo tried to score directly from the kick off but The Stopper was solid and held it well.

We played out the last 2 minutes without any further drama.

Another awesome comeback, this time from 2 behind. Next week, Band Club in what I have no doubt Herr Hoffman will call a Season Defining game.
