Match Report

The first of many 9am starts we have in the run in to the end of the regular season. Today we had the bare 11 with players away, working or injured. The kick off was delayed as there was no referee. Finally, Augustus, the longest serving member of the Strikers Club, grabbed a whistle and called us in for a pre-match briefing. Learning that he had had a triple by-pass we a) knew that he wouldn’t be keeping up with play and b) had our fingers crossed he would make it to the end of the game.

We started brightly creating a few early chances. From one raid by Ipswich down the left we earnt a corner. Ipswich crossed for Egg Head to bring down and poke past the keeper. 1-0.

The back four of Swingy, Choppy, Roberto and The Ax were solid all day and when Swerv (pushing hard for that number 1 keepers spot Leeds!) was tested, it was from long range – Swerv always getting his body behind the ball.

Swingy made a number of forward runs from his left back position, overlapping well with Ipswich. Unfortunately, although his foreplay was magnificent, he just couldn’t get it in the box (unlike life off the field ‘eh Swing)?

The second half saw a new ref and more stoic defending, quick counters and the more clear cut chances falling our way. La Celeste and Ipswich put a couple of passes together for La Celeste to find an opening just insde the box. The keeper parried the shot, but the bounce was favourable and sneaked over the line. 2-0.

The opposition visibily and audibly dropped off after the second goal and a third was always on the cards from this point. Harry put a ball through for La Celeste to run onto, giving the defender a mere 15 yards head start. Within about four strides, the ground was gobbled up and La Celeste got his foot round the big defender to fire across the keeper and into the back of the net. 3-0.

A great team effort to back up last week’s big win and sets us up well for the last 4 games of the season.

Dicky was excited when he heard the result. He had taken his special ‘We are top of the league, say we are top of the league’ outfit away with him for the weekend. Here he is on the sidelines watching his daughter play netball.
