Match Report

Belated match report V Springwood.

Post school holidays report for the other local derby. It was so long ago you would think I have forgotten the game but like every game it’s etched into my memory.

It was a bitterly cold and grey Sunday when the troops rocked up to Summerhayes Park with the sniff of points in the air. The starting 10 was shuffled around in the current team experimental stage. Tash partnered Megs in the backs, Bri moved to striker, Rebecca (on floating cloud 9) right back and Taylor central midfield. The combinations showed early promise cutting off most raids with only two or three shots on goal, one of which found the net late in the half. The reply from us was instant following numerous attacking raids by Bri who revelled in the striking position, constantly pushed Springwood’s backs and just before half time Adele did one of her characteristic runs from midfield and on the third shot on goal drew us level going into half time.

Emily’s return from a suspected break the game before kept everyone on a knife edge but she was typically solid in defence and attack and didn’t miss a beat. Similarly, Ash on her customary wing position, constantly led the attack down the right and even Zoe managed to fire a shot in anger.

Second half began in the same attacking fashion and we swapped Alex with Adele and we kept surging forward but now with Alex partnering Bri and was also extremely effective,   having a number of shots on goal and coming closest in the second half. Unfortunately a contained Springwood attack got off a limp shot away which miraculously rolled between Adele legs into the goals in what seemed the slowest goal in history much to the amusement of all.

The team kept pushing forward and the game was played between both boxes (about 30 metres in all at Summerhayes) but was end to end. Tash & Megs typically ran their lungs out and a counter-attack late in the second half sank the game for us. All in all, an entertaining end-to-end game with many opportunities lighting up an otherwise cold and grey day.
