Match Report: It was a bit overcast at Knapsack Stadium with overnight rain making the pitch a bit slippery underfoot. The day was a bit disjointed with late arrivals and early departures having more influence on our rotations than strategy.
Rory was running late and there were some talk about signing Rory’s mum and dad next year who, unlike Rory, are on time and prepared for our games. There was also a notable absence of the Sheep and the herd stood around like ”Browns cows” before kick off with no warm up. Percy was buoyed by Finals Football Sportsbet odds having him at 66/1 behind the referee to score, a good confidence builder. Rash coming back from the snow did the honourable thing and started on the bench.
We started strong as we are inclined to do and Rash reliably informed it could have been 4 nil after twenty minutes; unfortunately, it was still nil all by half time.
At half time Winston gave lots of feedback, apparently too much information for some to remember – his final piece of feedback was underlined with exclamation marks, “Put the ball in the back of the net !!!
We started the second half and chose to ignore that piece of advice, continuing to pepper away at the Emu goals while not hitting the back of the net. Forrest went closest when a regulation header for him on the back post went sailing past him. Emu struck a well finished goal after some scrappy play by us and the last pass was set up much to our dismay their ball player called “Toey” not the nickname for a classy footballer.
After good pressure on the Emu defence we won a corner and Deuce Bigalow, in his second position of the day, jumped like young salmon eager to spawn to power in a pin point cross from Rory, confirming unlike Forrest, Deuce was listening to Winston half time oratory. One all and we still looked nervy with twenty minutes to go.
Following on from Double Fists 50th birthday celebrations Forrest was reunited with his tuckerbag and looking for plunder as he ran down the left wing he noticed a jumbuck heading for a billabong in the box, Forrest whipped in a cross and the Jumbuck firmly headed the ball down and across the goals into the back of the net. It is quite a combination the Forrest and the Jumbuck have formed over the last couple of weeks.
We were in the lead finally although no one needed to say those fateful words “2-1 is a dangerous lead” and we did not dispel that rumour and made a meal of it.
