Match Report: After a wet start to football which has frustrated everyone across the district, the 15-2’s were full of energy and enthusiasm as they took to Knapsack Park for their first game of the season. It proved to be an outstanding effort but a disappointing result. After playing some excellent football for almost all of the first half and most of the second…… it was the one that got away!

We welcomed Zach and Lachlan B into the team and they fitted in instantly. They are both fine additions to the squad.

We set out to build on the fine team play that has been developed so well over the years, and throughout last year in particular under the guidance of outgoing coach Paul Foreman. (Didn’t he look relaxed on game day!). Paul has given the team a solid foundation to move up to the next level and age group. (My job is to not mess it up too much!)

Make no bones about it, these boys play very good football. Their deft touches on the ball, fine running passes and good teamwork were complemented by smart back passes when required.

They followed the coach’s instructions to a tee with good team passing and lots of shots on goal when the opportunities were presented.

Early goals through fine finishes from Gus and Aidan gave us some good momentum.

Superbly taken corners from Lachlan J resulted in some fine headers by Will C and Zach. Both sailed just over the bar but deserved a greater reward for their efforts.

After taking an early 2-0 lead and several near misses, Springwood settled into a better rhythm and managed to reply with three goals of their own, one from the penalty spot which turned out to be a disproportionate penalty in relation to the severity of the offence, but that’s football!

A fine break away goal from Oscar, after turning on the spot to stand up the defenders, saw us draw level.

A late goal to Springwood gave them a 4-3 lad and ultimately the win, on the score sheet at least.

Both Luke D and Jacob played a fine game at left and right back respectively, the latter in my opinion played the best game I’ve seen him play. Both were cool under pressure and more often than not managed to find a team mate to distribute the ball to.

All boys left with their heads held high safe in the knowledge that it is going to be an enjoyable and successful season of football.
