Match Report: It was a dark, stormy and muddy night that we headed to St Mary’s to see if we could maintain our position on top of the ladder. With both teams having an opportunity to take out the competition the game was bound to be tough … and it was.
There was next to zero footing and so passes that we would normally collect went sailing on by. It was horribly frustrating and St Mary’s had the run of play for the first half. A tenacious back line and active ring-in-keeper-of-great-skill-named-Pirate kept the scores at 0 – 0.
Half time came and went, and for once, the break actually worked in our favour. We began to make in-roads into the St Mary’s half, and whilst we were never safe, the run of play changed in our favour. GB was able to launch a few shots on goal; the midfield took back some of the control in the centre; and the defence and the-awesome-man-in-yellow maintained their control.
The play that ultimately broke the score line started with a good pass from Rod (from inside the 18 yard box) to yours truly. Unfortunately I turned straight into a St Mary’s player who deftly stripped me of the ball and played it forward. There was a scramble, a kick somewhere in there which resulted in a mad spin on the ball and somehow a goal went in.
The team was deflated but keen to see if we could continue our push forward. Voldermordt, who had broken the line a few times, broke it once again and put one away for the Blueys!
The score line remained this way until the whistle blew. The game was played like a final, with legs cramping all over the place. The effort put in by the players was huge, and the result was fair. Unfortunately though, the draw was enough to lose our place on top of the ladder (with two games left to play).
The men from the Mountains played hard. GB took a head clash and several shoulders … and still finished the match. Skud, BK and Turtle were rallying the troops the whole game. The Boss, playing in mids, won several important 50/50 challenges and moved the ball forward (having lost his brakes seventeen tackles earlier). Pirate made a number of final saves.
We repair for the next game!
