Match Report: How does one possibly put into words the crackling tension palpable on the sidelines of today’s epic rematch (grudge match) vs Warradale??
After a gruelling draw left us stinging last week, dropping our place on the ladder, the boys came out onto the field today with something to prove… and prove it they did.
A solid first half saw the team bring their A game. Starting from the back, where Ciaran braved the orange jersey today, to protect the goals with all his might and made some remarkable saves.
Despite a leg injury, our brick wall defender, Nicky, still managed to hold down the back line with gusto, aided today by some mighty power kicks from Travis that kept turning the play back into our offensive half. Olly stepped up the tempo in the backs taking on some powerful contests with utter fearlessness.
Holding down the middle of the field, and perpetually in the middle of the “Warradale scrum” we had Daniel & Riley, (and later, Harry) a powerful combo of “silent assassins” unwavering and determined to keep the pressure on the opposition’s driving advances and silently clearing balls out of seemingly impossible strongholds.
Our centre weapon, Bentley, must have cleared marathon distances in today’s game and all at breakneck speed. His ability to perpetually find the open space to receive our (ever improving) passes, turn the ball and drive it down the field is instrumental in the many shots on goal today and ensured our forwards, Ronan, Harry & Gabriel were kept busy throughout the half… despite the heart break of the countless near misses, we went into the break with a comfortable 3-1 lead…
Warradale answered back with some swift and decisive early action in the second half… and despite some differences of opinion regarding a few on field referee decisions, our boys showed their maturity by rising above it and returning their focus to the game being played.
Half two was punctuated with some incredible crosses, throw ins and more absolutely devastating missed goal opportunities that makes one wonder if the goal box is not, in fact, protected by some mysterious forcefield…
But our strength lies in the unity and cohesion these boys have been able to build… from a fractured and frazzled group of strangers at the beginning of the season, to a true force to be reckoned with. A team in every sense of the word; who rely on each other, play to each other’s strengths and prove that when you come together as a team, amazing things happen. Our player of the match today, Gabriel, showcasing this with his marked improvement in instrumental passes and positioning throughout the game.
Well done boys. You earned today’s win and should be proud of your achievements.
