Match Report: It was fourth plays fifth as we took on St Marys at home in Round 13. With just one point separating the teams, and our missing Zach, Will and Heath, it was destined to be a real tussle.

After a steady start it was an excellent early goal to Captain Gus, via a fine left footed shot from a narrow angle. The joy was short lived though as St Marys struck back with one of their own within a couple of minutes.

The game settled down to see end-to-end action. There were some good periods of passing without any real opportunities being created.

Our second goal came following a finely taken free kick from Will Cooke that rebounded into open space. Chris pounced on the ball and with a long shot floated the ball over the keeper’s head for an exciting goal from well outside the penalty area. Once again the joy was short lived with a reply from St Marys shortly after to make it two-all at half time.

Two goals to St Marys early in the second half had us on the back foot and we never really recovered.

St Marys put the pressure on with their defence in the second half. A lack of composure, and perhaps some fatigue, meant a number of our passes went astray giving the opposition some easy possession. It just didn’t seem to click for us today.

It is fair to say it was a pretty scrappy affair and probably not our best game. The effort was evident from one and all, but our execution sometimes let us down.

Aidan Monaco, man of the match, made some fine runs down the left side in both halves of football and showed superior skill in the way he controlled the ball at his feet. There were commendable efforts from Will Cooke and Zach Scoble in defence as well as Gus Langworthy who threatened on many occasions without getting too many clear chances.

Well done and sincere thanks to Jackson from the 15-3’s who gave us an invaluable substitute. Jackson was very involved at every opportunity and played a fine game.

It is a quick turn around as we take on St Clair at home at 6pm on Thursday night for a catch up game. It will be exciting to play under lights and it gives us a good opportunity to stay in touch with the teams ahead of us.
