Match Report: Injury, illness and an international transfer saga had jeopardized fielding a full team for the opening comp game. Fortunately injury and illness were overcome, although Oli’s transfer from England was still caught up in bureaucratic red tape.

A solid start saw us have possession for the majority of the opening period. A quick counter attack from RSL saw them take a lead 10 minutes in. The boys continued to dominate possession and were rewarded with a goal. Millsy took a free kick 25 yards out that was swung in. The keeper was unable to hold the ball and Damo nipped in to poke home an equalizer. A few minutes later some excellent work by Keastie down the left forced a mistake from the defence and Damo hit a speccy up and under from outside the box that dropped in under the crossbar. James had a great first half, linking well with his team mates down the right. Liam was also very strong at left back when taking over from Keastie. Near the end of the half, sweeper Sam prevented a goal with a last minute tackle on a forward that looked certain to score.

In the second half Jake went in goal to give Eli a run down the right hand side of midfield. Sam was given an opportunity as centre forward and made his presence felt from the start, putting defenders under pressure. Sam had a couple of shots on goal and was unlucky not to notch.

Hamish was strong all game marking at both left and right back.

RSL leveled mid way through the half after Jake’s goal kick was intercepted. We regained the lead with about 10 to go – Dom made a barnstorming run from midfield at the heart of the RSL defence and was rewarded with a goal.

The last few minutes, with the aforementioned illnesses and injury resurfacing under the baking sun, we defended stoutly to hold on for a win. Alex almost got us a fourth goal with a mazy run down the left but the referee blew the full time whistle just before Alex was about to shoot.

PoM went to Dom for excellent central defensive midfield work in the first half and great work further forward, including the goal in the second.
