Match Report |
Welcome return to Saturday footy. The young Bluies travelled to the lush grounds of Inalls lane and were hosted by a 10 man Colo squad on a brilliant sunny day. The same team that beat us at home with the same numbers in our brief mid season slump. Our bluies were thin themselves with only 12 players available but this proved more than enough to account for the opposition. Both teams started strongly but it was the bluies that moved the ball round the entire field to a makeshift wing attack, a position were most players spent some time. The use of the wings proved decisive as it tired the opposition and became the main route to goal. The right side of Ashley proved the most profitable as Wade put in a nicely taken goal mid way in the first half on the back of some defensive confusion. A runaway goal by Michael shortly after stretched the lead to two and the kids found their rhythm and motored through the game. While the team was subjected to some wing raids ourselves they were dealt with efficiently by Katie and General Dan with Tim also providing great coverage behind the two. The backs benefited by a robust performance by Brendan who as sweeper snuffed out most of Colo’s speculative breaks constantly recycling the ball to the midfield. The backs were certainly reading the game well. Rebecca and Lauren again worked tirelessly in midfield as did Dan Mc especially on the left wing and on the big pitch the three covered a lot of ground. Michael and Wade on the back of the girls high work rate directed traffic and in truth were unlucky not to have got more goals the most frustrating game belonged to Bri (right place wrong time & vice versa) but nevertheless plodded along being a real handful for the opposition. Just before half time a speculating kick (that was going out) was cradled into the goals. Bad luck Ben these things happen but in all he read the game behind the backs and was as ever quick to react on the outer edges of the box and beyond leaving the goals secure. Shortly after Ben made amends when another 11 metre penalty was awarded and he coolly slotted number seven from 6 to give a 3-1 half time score line. Along with the 11 metre came a red card and we were confronted with a nine man team. In earnest we should have taken more advantage than we did but the traffic was mostly one way (attack) and thanks to good goal keeping by the opposition and bad luck the score was stifled. Colo defended to the hilt and did have the odd break against play but were generally controlled by the ever vigilant backs. Michael midway through the second half broke through for a fourth goal. Our concentration lapsed and Colo pushed hard and did test Dan Mc in goals who showed great reaction to thwart the shots but very late in the game a screamer of a goal was conceded before we got control of the game back and finished strongly. In truth it was a game won in midfield and just behind with the team playing solid controlling football that was highly entertaining to watch, particularly Brendan, Wade Michael, Dan Mc and Ben. On display was how far Rebecca, Lauren and Ashley have come this year and the three really stepped up this game to another level. The rest or the team should also be commended as it was a cleat tem effort that won this game. The next venture is into St Johns for a top of the ladder clash and local derby so bring it on, we’re ready. |
