Match Report |
First game of the season and we travelled up to Summerhayes. First task was sorting out shirt numbers and this was done very politely! Con was goalie for the first half & did a great job, just conceding one as Springwood broke away quickly and caught us short at the back. We hit back late in the half with Ash riding out a number of challenges down the left before whipping in a cross that Finn controlled and fired home. Kane and Jake were solid at the back all game and already look comfortable in these positions. After a great first half playing right midfield, Eli went in goal for the second half. We went behind for the second time after Aiden gave away a free kick on the edge of the area – stepping across a Springwood player (a little harsh in the Coach’s opinion!) Con got his head to the direct free kick but unfortunately the deflection meant the ball was out of Eli’s reach. The boys (Maeve was away this week) fought back well. Ash got two goals – a crisp shot the keeper could not stop and a penalty put away in the corner (after a hand ball on the line (advantage would have seen a goal but the ref had already blown)). Coach had asked for two things at half time and they were both executed well – doubling up on Springwood’s tricky number 9 and secondly taking the ball wide from defence rather than cutting back inside. Con almost got a headed goal at the right end, flicking an Ashton cross but the keeper adjusted and saved well. The passing and movement was great to watch – Damo and Dom interchanged well on one occasion as we broke away. Aiden got a late goal, calmly stepping inside the last defender and passing into the net past the keeper – his Dad watched on wishing he too had such composure in front of goal! 🙂 Alex Cranbrook and Alex Mills both played well today – Alex C linking up well down the left with Ash and Alex M very strong in the centre of midfield, pushing forward at the right times. Coach’s PoW went to Jake – PoW includes effort and attitude at training as well as game day and as a new recruit from League, Coach was impressed with Jake’s listening and then executing as asked. |
