Match Report |
With three players out this week we knew we would be in for a tough game against a good, physical, Hazelbrook team. No subs meant that the kids would be in for a good work out! Con came to watch and cheer in from the side lines. Kane went in goal for the whole game. Although he did not have too many saves to make, one great effort in the second half from a well struck shot was crucial. Ash was asked to play left back all game and not to venture too far forward. Although this is not his natural game, he did as was asked and the only goal of the first half came courtesy of Ash’s long clearance bouncing up in front of the keeper for Riley to time his jump and header to perfection to get to the ball first and nod in. Arwen ad Xavier were the other two at the back. Second half was more of the same, lots of defending, breaking quickly to try and create a chance. We managed to put one away in this fashion, Riley again running across the keeper and left footed putting it away in the opposite corner. In midfield Maeve, James and Aidan were all superb – battling to win every ball. The Hazelbrook boys in midfield were very physical but I was proud of the reaction of our kids – no retaliation, whinging or chat back. Fortunately the assigned young referee was very good, giving free kicks where they were due as well as getting players on both sides to re-take throw ins if not done correctly – good to see. Thomas had a good game up front – couple of moments particularly – putting Riley through on goal in the first half and almost scoring himself with a well struck shot the second half. Aside from his goals Riley worked very hard to nick the ball up front and chased down a lot of ball sent forward on the break. Player of the week was awarded to Xavier for a magnificent performance at right back. Did not miss a challenge all game, was full of energy and working with Arwen and Ash meant Kane did not have to make too many saves. Great teamwork today to grind out a win, well done kids you should all be very proud of your performance today. |
