Match Report: Old man bragging rights at stake, on a clear sunny winter afternoon at the ‘Sack, as the two Sunday 35’s team came face to face
We had a feeling the ‘Whites’ had the upper hand just before kick off as Brad lost the battle to convince them that we should not be using the new club balls (Brad telling me later in the game to hoof one into the bush).
An even opening with the Whites troubling us through the middle. This resulted in two goals – the second one a re-taken pen by Rod – great nerve shown, despite a few comments suggesting he hit the second one, harder, higher …
We adjusted the back line formation to three pushing Mick into midfield and this seemed to do the trick as we came into the game pulling one back with a great finish from JB across the keeper and Thor serving one up on a silver platter for Lowndsey to rise above defender and keeper to level on the stroke of half time. We were very happy to come in level
Second half and we felt we were starting to boss the game though Whites were still a threat on the break. We created a number of chances but Fabian Barthez in the Whites goal made some good saves. The break through came from Mick as his shot went under the keeper and we pushed out to 4-2 with Mick slotting past the oncoming keeper
Doth my hat to the call of the day by the young female ref who had the 22 old men on the pitch well under control as this example shows – I gave a free kick away outside our box. Kev calls ‘stand over the ball Cobra’, so I do, using my shirt to slowly wipe the sweat from my brow to allow us to get organised. Ref says ‘move back number 4’, I say ‘sorry, I’m hot’, ref says with a smirk knowing what she is about to deliver ‘no, you’re not’. Too good
Thanks Whites for a competitive game played the right way
