Match Report: The only thing harder than writing this match report was the game that was played. Our boys brought their A-game today, with something to prove against the current comp champions who remain undefeated in our league.
After an early free kick against us, the boys were able to find their calm and regain their focus; tackling, clearing, passing and running with unparalleled passion to finally create an opportunity for Travis to net the equaliser.
Our back line were put under constant pressure throughout the game today, but Ciaran, Nicky and Harry formed a formidable wall, helping keep our goalie, Ronan, out of too much strife.
In the midfield today, Daniel and Olly endured the dramatic dust storm on centre pitch as they tackled like Virgil Van Dijk to stem the relentless drive of our opponents, including standing their ground against a lot of very passionate hip and shoulder by our hungry competitors.
Our forward pack of Bentley, Travis and Gabriel brought the razzle dazzle and used their speed and stamina to open up some heart stopping goal opportunities, sending us into the break, tensions high but down 2-1.
A few field shuffles for half two saw Ciaran hold down the fort in goals, producing some incredible saves.
Some of our team found it a challenge to adhere to the coach’s direction and hold their assigned positions early in the first half, allowing our defence to slip momentarily… but with passions running high on all sides and a LOT of physicality, our boys are to be commended for digging deep and continuing to chase the goals, managing to keep the scores level after both Travis and Bentley managed to drive some high speed screaming balls past the opposing defensive line and into the net.
A late equaliser from our incredible player of the match today, Travis, sent the electricity right across the pitch with both teams giving it their everything heading into the dying minutes.
This hunger to take down the undefeated top dogs of the league seeing almost all 18 players bunkered down in our goal square for the final, frantic, closing seconds. Dust flying, feet kicking, balls shouldered out and steely determination by our boys holding onto the draw and elation as the whistle went at 4-4 only for the ultimate heartbreak when the opposing side protested the final fray and were awarded a late and unexpected goal.
A bitter 5-4 loss the final score but such an incredible show of soccer skill and sheer drive and determination from a team that have come so far this season… watch out Penrith, we are coming back for you. A huge shout out to our under 11 friends, James and Wyatt, for stepping in as our fresh legs as needed throughout the game and a very nervous manager who now has to pay up on the promise of another “old lady cartwheel” for an incredible hat trick.
