Match Report: State Cup U18’s 1st Round
First round of the State Cup played at Summerhayes. Some administrative mis-communication meant the game was played on a slightly over-sized mod field that hadn’t been mowed since Xmas & a trip by Dean to one of the Springwood officials home to pick up the team sheet off the printer. Warm up was excellent, then we stood in the shade for 1/2 hour and cooled down as the previous game went to an exciting golden goal extra time
The game underway, Narellan were on top early but this is a resilient bunch of boys who handled the pressure well. Eight minutes in Liam popped a super ball over the right back for Jake to race onto & with strength we all know Jake has (& if we don’t Jake kindly removes his shirt at any given opportunity so we can see the results of his gym hours) Jake out-muscled his opponent and belted home the go ahead goal
We got on top as the half wore on and chances, half chances, came and went. Beaso had a header at the far post, there was an obvious hand ball not give for a penalty and just a lot of good play in and around the opponents box
Half time focus was to not take the foot off the gas, keep them out and one more should finish this off
Further chances came and went for Damo, then Sam, a Jake header off a corner but we couldn’t get the second. Harry went up for a header and the back of his head was headed by the opponent seeing Harry floored and subbed off under HIA
With twenty to go Beaso was fouled in the box and a penalty was given. Liam hit it well but the keeper guessed well and made a good save
Narellan’s tail up now they started to push us back more and more but not creating a lot until a thunder bolt of a shot outside the box was in before Eli had chance to react with six minutes to go
The boys reacted brilliantly and turned the momentum looking to win it in normal time. Two minutes to go and Liam got the ball 25 yards out and with a little bit of time hit a shot that from my view initially looked to be going just over but the knuckle ball dipped late, and right in the top corner. Celebrations ensued, including the coach – sorry couldn’t help myself
Coach’s player of the match to Jake – great work rate, a real threat on the opposition goal and a super goal to give us the advantage
