Match Report: On a glorious winter’s day we travelled to Richmond to take on the Lowland Wanderers. Third vs fourth on the table.

It was a cautious start to the game with both teams feeling their way. A long ball from the Wanderers was finished very well with an unstoppable shot going over Robbie’s head as he wisely came out to close down the scoring angles. A fine finish but a goal scored against the run of play.

Both teams had a reasonable share of possession and field location with the Blueys stringing good sets of passes together on many occasions. It is terrific to see the boys continuing to put an emphasis on playing passing football as a team.

The score remained 1-0 at half time when the wind seemed to pick up and change direction a little to add to the challenge we faced in the second half.

Controlling the ball extremely well and making several presses forward meant we dominated the second half but unfortunately we were unable to capitalise. Credit must go to the determined Wanderers defence which prevented us from getting the necessary space to create close goal scoring opportunities. Frustration seemed to set in and the final touch just didn’t go our way. It simply wasn’t meant to be our day!

Man of the Match Zach Scoble displayed fabulous ball control when under pressure in defence to provide many fine balls to mid-fielders in space. Excellent execution and fine decision making!

Luke Springett showed fine control on the ball and was a force to be reckoned with in the midfield. Lachlan Jones is regaining some good match form following a few weeks off with injury. Fine through balls for others to run on to and some fine corners were the hallmark of his play. Luke Doughty played perhaps his best attacking game of the season making a number of fine runs up the left.

Will Foreman did well to adjust when given opportunities to play back, mid and forward. Lachlan Bowe, Chris, Aidan and Jacob did some skilful distribution and worked tirelessly from start to finish. Will Cooke made many fine decisions as the last line of defence and remained composed at all times. Gus led well from the front and was as determined as ever, especially having copped a couple of heavy knocks.

Robbie was once again superb including one outstanding save from a fine volley from the Wanderers striker. This brilliant save was the highlight of the afternoon. It was quite seriously one of the finest saves I’ve seen for some time in any level of football! The sporting exchange afterwards between Robbie and the Wanderers striker was also a credit to both players. Sportsmanship at its very best!

The boys were understandably disappointed with the final score but when they reflect on the game I am sure they will see that it was another fine step forward, and another good learning experience, as we move towards the latter rounds of season 2017. We need to remain patient and be confident that good team passing football is the most enjoyable to play and will ultimately prevail.
