Match Report: For our return match-up against competition front-runners Glenmore Park FC, it was great to see Jonesy back on the park, giving us two valuable substitutes. The home ground advantage, some recent excellent training (and Pizza) sessions and an eagerness to get back out onto the park after some wet weather were all signs that it was going to be a cracking match. And so it was!
Glenmore Park opened the scoring with an early move down their left, a good cross and a fine volley which was unstoppable and caught us a little unawares.
The match settled into a tense rhythm with both teams moving the ball around well. Our team game was again strong with many very good passing moves. It is fair to say that a second goal to Glenmore Park came against the run of play. A long ball created space and with a good finish we found ourselves down two goals at half time.
As we entered the second half we kept our formations well and showed great tenacity in defence. The two Lachlans combined to feed a good ball to Gus who used his local knowledge to ‘bounce’ the ball off a tuft of grass and up and over the Glenmore Park keepers arms. 2-1. Game on!
The boys took their attack and defence up to another level and, when Heath was fouled inside the box, were rewarded with a penalty which Captain Gus slotted expertly into the top right corner to give a 2-2 scoreline.
We pressed hard right until the final whistle but were unable to secure another goal. With a little more patience and some luck it might have been otherwise.
Continuing to play fine passing football was a highlight of this week’s performance. The most pleasing aspect though, was the determination and energy in defence. By attacking in defence on all parts of the park we managed to put the opposition under pressure and prevented them from getting any clean ball.
Having been beaten by this team 5-1 in the first round, a draw was an excellent result based on courageous defence, clever team play and great skill on the ball.
Man of the Match Jacob Hunter was pitted against taller and faster players for most of the game but showed great skill to defend superbly. Gus’ finishing was polished. Heath was very strong in defence and made many incisive runs, often in heavy traffic. Chris played a fine game and made valuable contributions in both defence and attack. Having said that, EVERY single player took their game to another level and contributed to a very good result and a fine game of football!
I can’t wait until next week to see what the boys can produce with a challenging away game against Lowland Wanderers!
