Match Report: We travelled to Hazelbrook for a must win game against the team who are second on the ladder. Both teams had depleted line-ups for the middle of the school holidays contest. We had 10 players and they had 9 giving plenty of room on the park to play quality open football which both teams did.
Determined defence and fine team passing were the hallmark of our play from start to finish, taking full advantage of the extra space. The back four were solid in defence, remaining calm and composed, taking control of the ball and distributing very well to the mid-field. With lots of space there were even three back passes to the keeper!
There were many fine raids on the Hazelbrook end of the field by the front five but we often fell just short of putting ourselves into close enough goal scoring spaces. Just one or two touches more would have seen more goals scored.
Lachlan Jones distributed the ball well from right midfield, made many fine runs out wide and covered a lot of territory, playing his best game for some time.
Fine goals were scored by Gus, Aidan and Will Cooke. These were complemented by fine ‘near misses’ from just about everyone! Luke S, Lachlan J, Aidan and Lachlan B to name a few! The best of which was Luke Doherty’s fine run up the middle and shot. It looked a goal all the way until the last second when it hit the cross bar. We could easily have scored another three or four!?
Captain Gus Langworthy earned man of the match scoring our opening goal and making many fine presses forward. This included a fine run down the right and excellent cross which resulted in our third and ultimately match winning goal. His on field talk was firm and positive and helped everyone to stay focussed and avoid the dreaded quick reply after we score a goal!
After our taking a 3-1 lead, Hazelbrook replied by scoring a fine goal from a free kick. A superb strike which drew an excellent attempted save from Zach. This late goal gave us a few nervous moments towards the end of the match but we held on for a well deserved victory! As I said to Lachlan 20 times in the car on the way home, “It was a good win mate!”
It was another fine keeping performance from Zach. His goal kicks were more often than not delivered to the feet of our players and his decision making was once again excellent! What a fine back up keeper for Robbie!
The boys playing quality team passing football continues to be a pleasure to witness.
We play St Clair again next Saturday which is another must win game for a chance to finish in the top four!
