Match Report: It was a chilly evening at Knapsack for our first clash with St Clair – a rain-delayed game from earlier in the season.
With a number of players away, Billy was on loan from the 15-3’s. It was great to see Billy back and enjoying a game with his old soccer mates. Even with the extra player, we only had 10 so it was clear that the boys were going to have to put in a big effort, which they all did! St Clair had 12 but some were clearly on loan from junior teams so a good contest unfolded.
The game settled into a pattern of play moving from one end to the other. Through having the better of the play overall we opened the scoring through a fine finish by Gus. Expertly tucked past the keeper for a clean goal.
A very quick reply from St Clair had the boys’ heads down. Something for us to work on. Keeping things tight, after we score. Starting again straight away with energetic defence!
After a tight struggle across the park, St Clair were next to score. The challenge was there for the taking and the boys were up to it, showing great energy and determination to gradually gain some momentum.
Lachlan Jones scored an excellent goal by ‘drilling it’ (they all count!!) into the back of the net (reminiscent of his father in his playing days!) to make the score 2-all which, despite our exerting considerable pressure in the last 10 minutes, was the final score.
Will Cooke was outstanding in defence to earn man of the match and Aidan Monaco played his best game of the season so far! Jacob and Chris were both tireless in defence and made good choices when under pressure.
Zach Scoble filled in as keeper and didn’t disappoint. He used his experience as a keeper to good effect and just missed out on MOTM. He made many fine saves and his decision making was excellent, often coming out to narrow the angles and put pressure on the attackers. Look out Robbie!
Many thanks again to Billy for helping us out and making a very positive contribution in the mid-field. One excellent strike just missed but was certainly a fine shot! A skillful and enthusiastic player!
ALL played well and put in a mighty effort to grab a draw when one man down.
We’ll take the point which keeps us in touch with the top four!
