Match Report

Having performed well in all of our pre-season trials, there was an air of excitement within the team about the season ahead. El Capitano asked us all to be there bright and early and only Swinger defied the call, coming straight to the ground from The Club after yet another all-nighter.

Brett had the inside word on the newly formed Jamo team. Apparently they had played All Age last season and had recruited Eusebio, Pele and Best in the off-season in order to be eligible for O35 2’s. Nepean had decided 4’s was where they were to play and lucky us were their first opponents.

We started brightly and managed to take the lead early when Gazza found Marcos who coolly slotted home across the keeper. 1-0. Jamo fought back and won a free kick 240 yards out from our goal. A speculative punt looped over Leeds and into the top corner. 1 all. Soon after a through ball sent their winger racing into our box. Swinger gave him a love tap and he went down like a sack of potatoes. Penalty, converted, 2-1 Jamo. From an attacking free kick, small pieces of Gazza’s teeth were left lodged in the back El Capitano’s head after they both went for the same ball. We finished the half strongly – Elmar brought us level, Dave put us in front and Elmar notched with his head. Half time 4-2.

Half time was tough – we had to endure watchng Merv sup on his second beer after helping the 5’s to a good win.

An evenly contested opening period of the second half. Gazza was clean through one on one with the keeper but those darned new slippery socks meant he didn’t quite strike it sweetly enough and the keeper got down to it. Not long after Jamo equalised as Leeds came off his line to a through ball and crashed into Roberto who was looking to intercept. Tap in, 4-3.

After that we slowly got on top. Their keeper saved Gordon Banks like from Gazza’s header but shortly after we added two further goals courtesy of Marcos and Gazza. After the game we watched our former O35 1’s turn out for Jamo. On learning the key reason for the switch was the promise of their own changing rooms with steam room, sauna and jacuzzi we felt a little disappointed that we didn’t have these luxuries at Blueys. Swinger lifted our spirits though handing out guest passes to everyone for next Tuesday at The Club with the promise of ‘all those facilities and a few ‘extras”.
