Match Report

Having won their two previous games and with one eye on the grand final, the Blueys ladies needed just a draw against Penrith RSL to progress. They appeared determined to go there in style, playing some of their best football of the season. The passing was crisp, intensity high, and an early lead was the reward when Darcy Bonnet pounced on a loose ball in the box to send the ladies to a one nil lead. Defending for most of the first half RSL had to settle of the occasional counter attack, which was quickly cleaned up and turned back into an attacking play for the Blueys. Despite the domination it was a surprise to all that the score remained this way until half time, as with a little luck it could have been 4 or 5 nil.

Regardless, the Blueys ladies entered into the second half confident that the goals would eventually come, and they did. It took less than 5 minutes for Darcy Bonnet to get her second for the day, a solid finish from just inside the 18 yard box – a credit to the great team work in the build-up. Not long after, Romy Thompson finally got her goal, with a decisive finish, one on one, having been sent clear of the defence from a great through ball. At 3 nil Blueys were in cruise control and looked like they were really enjoying the fixture. And the goals kept coming. Melanie Semeniuk grabbed a goal, an opportunistic tap-in coming off the end of some more great team play. Nadine Hardy bagged a double –  a lovely chip from the edge of the 18 yard which sailed just under the crossbar following an intense goal box scramble, and an amazing left-foot finish from a ridiculously tight angle which sent the growing Blueys cheer squad into raptures.

Sarah Boswell capped of a great performance when her cross/shot from the sideline sailed past everyone and into the bottom corner. The only blip was a commendable solo effort from an RSL player, who made a great run past 3 or 4 Blueys defenders to score. With the final score sitting at 7-1, the ladies were jubilant and will take confidence from the result going into the grand final.
